2 Faults In Cloth
There are many faults in grey cloth received from the loom and for which the manufacturer is held responsible. The most troublesome are those mentioned hereunder: - Warp Faults - Ends missing, floating ends, reedy, bare or badly covered cloth, faulty selvedges, oil stains, thick and thin places (see under each term). Weft Faults - Oil stains especially in doubled yarns, looped or ballooned weft, weft-bars, floats, thick and thin places, traps or smashes, box-marks (see under each term) -
3 Kityang Cloth
A plain weave fabric made on hand looms in the Kityang district of China. Ramie yarns are used which are hand prepared. The worker selects the fibre and soaks it in fresh water for 30 minutes. The fibre is then split into threads of the desired size at the thick end and pulled apart. Two threads are then joined by doubling the small end over the thick end of another thread and rolling on the knee. The only twisting is where the threads join. This process is repeated until the desired length is obtained, the thread being run into a basket and later sun-dried. The cloth is made in many grades from coarse to fine and from 15-in. to 18-in. wide. Usually dyed navy or sky blue. -
4 Caro Cloth
A carded woollen fabric produced by special automatic machinery by the Caro Cloth Corporation. The cloth can be embossed or rubberised. It is cheap and resists wear. Used for overcoats heavy suitings etc. A cotton yarn base is used and the wool is ' needled ' into this base. The four rows of needle bars operate at 600 penetrations per minute. The sheets of wool fibres can be as thick or thin as required. The Caro fabrics can be produced very cheaply. When it is fulled the felting action is at right angles to the length and width and the more it is fulled, the stronger it becomes. -
5 Pilot Cloth
A woollen goods term given to the indigo-blue dyed heavy overcoating cloth, used for seamen's coats, etc. Usually made with 4-shaft twill weave, 54-in. finished and dyed, principally dark blue, but brown, black and green are done. These cloths have a thick nap on the face. A typical cloth is made from 250 yard/oz. woollen crossband and 130 yard/oz. woollen crossband weft and weighs 36 oz. per yard. -
6 Carriage Cloth
Fabric for seating in railway carriages and tramcars, and is exceptionally strong and durable. Usually woven of lustre worsted yarns made from English wool. A standard cloth is made of three warps and two wefts. Two of the warps are botany yarn in two shades and the other is cotton dyed in one of the wool warp shades. The wefts are two picks cotton and one pick thick botany. The rib or repp ground is emphasised by the coarse wool picks. Colours are mostly red and black. -
7 Eiderdown Cloth
A light woollen cloth woven loose and finished with a long nap on both sides for women's and children's wear. Designed to take the place of the knitted style, which is known by the same name. The warp is harder spun than the thick soft spun weft. -
8 Fotah Cloth
A thick, strong and durable cloth, used for garments for women. A " than " or piece measures 25 to 30 cubits, but small pieces of 3 to 5 cubits long are also available. Made in Jalpaiguri, Rungpur and Pumea. -
9 Kashgar Cloth
Thick, but light dress goods, made of Kashgar wool; it has a long-napped face. It is also known as camel-hair cloth. -
10 Kid Cloth
A fabric made at Lahore, India, from the inferior qualities of Pashmina wool. Plain weave and closely woven, the cloth is thick, soft and warm. -
11 Petersham Cloth
A heavy woollen overcoating cloth, generally indigo dyed, of simple construction and similar to Witneys, Elsyians and Sardinians, except that it differs in finish. A thick nap is raised on the face and this nap is rubbed by special means into small clusters. Woven 8-shaft twill, 60-in. wide, 54-in. finished, from 190 yard/oz. crossband woollen warp and 110 yard/oz. openband woollen weft. For the weave see naps. -
12 Tissue Figured Cloth
Very fine muslins used for curtains, etc., which have large jacquard designs produced by extra weft. The ground cloth is plain open weave muslin made from fine warp and weft. Thick figuring weft interweaves with the ground warp only where required for pattern, and otherwise floats loosely on the back and is afterwards cropped off.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Tissue Figured Cloth

13 Bermuda Cloth
An all-cotton fabric made for tropical suits, in plain weave. Thick, level and round yarns are used of various weights. -
14 Charmelaine Cloth
A dress fabric made from Botany wool warp and weft in a three-shaft twill weave (1 X 2), giving a twill repp effect. Two-fold yarns are used and six shafts as a rule. The ends per inch vary from 90 to 130 and picks 40 to 60. Fine warp and thick hard twisted weft. Usually dyed in light shades and finished to 54-in. A sample quality is made 58-m., 120 X 48 per inch, 2/72's / 2/36's, 1 X 2 weave. -
15 Farash Cloth
These are used for covering floors. They sometimes contain broad stripes of coloured ends and are generally of a very thick quality. Woven on hand looms from Indian cotton. -
16 Galway Scarlet Cloth
